Monarch Butterfly & Milkweed

© Ashley Halsey 2013

I just recently finished this pencil and watercolor piece for the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center's 2014 calendar. Although it will be printed in black and white, I couldn't resist adding the vibrant orange of the Monarch Butterfly. I have always been fascinated by the epic Monarch migration.

The theme for this year's calendar was based around a farm property that the nature center is acquiring called Coogan Farm. It's exciting to see such a beautiful piece of historic property being preserved for the community to enjoy as well as a becoming a place for nature to thrive.

If you are interested, this piece is available for purchase as a print from my Etsy Shop as well.

These New York City Days

I recently discovered a new app called Montaj for my iphone and I am having so much fun with it! This is a video I just made from clips of the city I collected over the past few weeks. I don't use video that much - I more often take still photos. However, this app is allowing me to create video in a way I never could before. I can capture what I see in a whole different way. The music also really sets the tone and is actually somewhat realistic because I am often walking the streets with my headphones in and music playing. There's always so much to see in New York, and even the same scenes change every day, so much so that a video can only capture a fleeting moment of it.
